Reading Scripture:

2 Chronicles 7-8

Daily Verse:

2 Chronicles 7:3 When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord , saying, “He is good; his love endures forever.”

Daily Question:

If the temple does not have God’s presence, what is it?

Daily Devotion:

King David once wrote in Psalm 27:4 saying “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.” Actually at the time that this Psalm was written, there was no temple, only the tabernacle. To David, the only thing he wanted in his life from God was to be with him, to seek Him, to gaze upon God’s beauty in God’s holy house. Finally, in 2 Chronicles 7, God’s holy house is completed by Solomon. In 2 Ch. 6, Solomon calls upon the Lord to fill the temple with His glorious holy presence. God answers their prayer and fills the temple with His glory. I think it is so amazing that the God of the Universe would be willing to come down onto the earth he created and place his presence and His Name into a temple made by man. Without God’s presence, the temple would just be another empty building. It would be a beautiful building, but without God, it would have no meaning or purpose. His presence made the temple holy.

We are also called to be the temple of God. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. In the same way, God’s Spirit gives us purpose and meaning. He is what makes us holy. Without Him, we would be an empty shell of ourselves. Without purpose, without meaning, without direction. God protects us, gives us a direction for our lives, and walks with us to eternity. Truly, we must worship Him, saying “He is good; his love endures forever.”

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for choosing me, an empty jar of clay to fill with your presence, glory and holiness. Again and again I am grateful for the love and mercy you show us. Let me walk in your direction, stand under your protection, and stay close to your side. Amen!
