Daily Devotion:
When reading through Isaiah, we would normally separate chapter 35 and 36 into two different sections. But suddenly, when reading these two chapters together, you have a sense of God’s consistency. In chapter 35, he promises that those who trust in him he would “strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way” because he would “come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” God will not sit still when his people are threatened. He is certainly not like the field commander describes him in chapter 36. This field commander shows just how little he knows of the Lord, asking “isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed” and “the Lord himself told me to march against this country and destroy it” and finally asking “How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”. In just the chapter before, the Lord promises that “those the Lord has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads.” Although time wise, it seems that chapter 35 and 36 are two separate occasions. But, God’s promises will never change. No matter how much time has passed, God will fulfill all that he promises.
The same is true today. All around us, it may seem like the world is turning its back against the Lord, and we may face very real threats and attacks. But Jesus promises in John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace。 In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Let us then hold fast to the promises that our Lord has given us and remain strong in His strength and grace, knowing that we serve a God who has already overcome the darkness of this world.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,Thank you for the reminder that even in dark times, you remain faithful. That no matter what I am facing or will face in the future, you will walk with me. Even if I cannot see what it ahead, I know that you already know the way. Help me trust in your guidance. Pray in Jesus’ name, Amen!
